Liverpool could be about to sign their next Xherdan Shaqiri as major update emerges overnight - opinion

Liverpool have been known for being rather frugal in the transfer market over the last couple of seasons.

Of course, there have been times when the Reds have chosen to splash the cash, with the 2025-26 summer transfer window being an example of that.

However, more often than not, the Anfield outfit have been a sell-to-buy club and would only bring in a player if they were guaranteed to improve their team or if it was too good a deal to turn down.

Take Federico Chiesa as an example, Liverpool didn’t need the Italy international last season, but since he was available for a fee worth around £12.5million, it was too good an opportunity to turn down.

The same situation may be about to occur with Arne Slot’s men this summer after a major development was shared about the club of a potential transfer target late on Tuesday night.

Liverpool could be about to sign Malick Fofana for a cut-rate fee

Since the summer transfer window opened up at the start of June, Liverpool have been linked with a plethora of talent.

However, one name that refuses to go away is that of Malick Fofana.

The Belgian plies his trade for Lyon and had a breakout season in Ligue 1 for them last term; however, due to the financial issues the club are facing, they’ve now been relegated to Ligue 2.

And, while the club are set to appeal the decision, the prospect of them being relegated opens up the potential for plenty of opportunity for football teams across the world, including Liverpool’s Premier League rivals, Chelsea.

When the Reds initially enquired about a move for Fofana, they were quoted £42million, but if Lyon need to recoup some money quickly, he could end up being sold for far less than that.

How Malick Fofana could become Liverpool’s next Xherdan Shaqiri

Although FSG’s purse strings have been quite tight since their takeover, some of the cheaper moves they’ve made have worked out magnificently for Liverpool.

Andy Robertson and Xherdan Shaqiri are arguably some of the best examples of this.

Both players had massive parts to play in Liverpool’s success during their time at the club, with Robertson still putting in a shift up to this day.

And, while Shaqiri may not have been that prolific during his time at Anfield, his versatility and ability to create something out of nothing are just two of the assets that made him a hero to the Liverpool fans.

If the Reds can seal a deal for Fofana worth around £20-25million and beat the likes of Chelsea to his transfer, it would be yet another no-risk move from Slot’s men and could end up being an important addition.

That is, especially if Darwin Nunez, Luis Diaz and Chiesa all choose to pack their bags and exit Anfield this summer.
