Alexsandro: Arsenal target Ancelotti favourite in£34m transfer

Lille Open to Negotiations as Arsenal Eyes Alexsandro

Arsenal are closing in on a summer swoop for Brazilian defender Alexsandro, after Lille OSC signaled their openness to negotiations over a deal worth around £34 million. The 24-year-old has become one of Mikel Arteta’s primary defensive targets as the Gunners look to rebuild at the back for a busy 2025/26 campaign.

This pursuit of Alexsandro comes off the back of a great season in the Ligue 1, as the centre-back really caught a lot of people’s eyes. Brazilian Alexsandro, since joining Lille from Chaves in 2022, has proved to be an aggressive player with positional intelligence and capable of playing out from the back. His progress hasn’t gone unnoticed, and Arsenal’s data-led recruitment team have been tracking him for months.

Lille, in need of balancing finances, have shown willingness to part ways with Alexsandro if the right offer arrives. The club had been reluctant to lose key men, but have plans to reshape the squad and have targeted this summer as the time to cash in. Arsenal, meanwhile, are willing to take advantage as they seek to bolster their options at the back, where they are keen to have the flexibility to play both three and four at the back next season.

The Gunners especially value his left-footedness — a major asset in today’s centre-back market — and appreciate his comfort playing in a high line. With Jakub Kiwior and Nuno Tavares both facing uncertain futures at the Emirates, Arteta continues searching for a quality left-sided addition and believes the Brazilian checks every box for his tactical setup.

Ancelotti’s Admiration Adds Weight to Player Profile

Arsenal’s pursuit intensifies as reports suggest Alexsandro also features on Real Madrid boss Carlo Ancelotti’s wishlist. The Italian tactician has reportedly scouted the Lille defender as someone who could eventually fit into Madrid’s setup. And although there is yet to have been a formal offer from Madrid, Ancelotti’s comments about the player continue to fuel speculation. And his approval only serves to enhance the feeling that Alexsandro does have what it takes to make it at the very top.

While Real Madrid have been concentrating on other business this summer, their previous interest in the player has not gone unnoticed by Premier League clubs. The Gunners have now stepped up their pursuit with Lille now willing to talk and there are reports they have made contact.

Arsenal are also mindful of Financial Fair Play regulations and continue to favour smart, mid-level deals rather than high-profile marquee signings. Alexsandro checks all the boxes — he is young, tactically versatile and his price tag is reasonable. He is contracted until 2027 but Lille could be forced to entertain a sale to finance a summer rebuild.

Arsenal have not yet made any official bid but they seem to have taken the first step to breaking the ice. Lille’s willingness to sell has also paved the way for significant dialogue and the Gunners are poised to step up their interest over the next few days.

Author’s Opinion

Alexsandro’s profile fits Arteta’s system well — aggressive, technically secure, and composed under pressure. He also brings the kind of skill set that should provide immediate value to a team that plays a high defensive line and builds from the back.

Yet switching from Ligue 1 to the Premier League is a jump that has challenged many defenders. The fast-and-furious intensity and physicality of the Premier League has got the better of many good players before. Alexsandro would need time and guidance to adjust, especially if he’s expected to contribute immediately.

Still, at £34 million, this could be a shrewd piece of business. If Arsenal land Alexsandro, they won’t just gain a capable defender — they’ll secure a player with the potential to evolve into a long-term starter.
