Leeds United are in need of heavy investment in the squad this summer.

Daniel Farke is looking to bolster his squad for the Premier League with the Whites facing a brutal survival battle.

They have already added Lucas Nmecha and Jaka Bijol to their ranks and the incomings are not expected to calm down any time soon.

However, that could put the Elland Road outfit in a perilous situation when it comes to Profit and Sustainability Rules.

Leeds PSR worries raised amid huge summer

Top-flight clubs are allowed to lose a total of £105million over a rolling three-year period, and Leeds could face issues if they spend too big, too soon.

BBC Journalist Johnny Buchan believes that the 49ers’ experience in the NFL, where there is a yearly salary cap, could prove vital in the Whites avoiding any PSR issues.

Speaking on BBC Radio Leeds’ Don’t Go To Bed Just Yet podcast (24 June), he said: “There has also got to be a churn in the squad this year, because we have got to increase the standard of the squad, so it is really difficult timing-wise.

“The messaging from the club has all been them saying that it is workable, it is manageable. Yes, it is difficult, it is tight, but it is workable and manageable this year.

“They have got lots of experience in the building dealing with this from dealing with it in the NFL and salary caps that are in place over there, so lots of experience. Yes, it is a different sport, but money is money, spreadsheets are spreadsheets.”

49ers knowledge will be crucial for Leeds

Paraag Marathe and Co. will be aware of exactly what they can and cannot spend as they look to back Farke with new additions.

The balance between getting the quality players that are needed and balancing the books is a game that they are already familiar with, as Buchan states.

Lucas Nmecha Free transfer

Jaka Bijol £15million

Leeds’ signings so far

They have shown some of this nous already with the LS11 outfit as they handled their business very well last summer, selling the likes of Georginio Rutter, Archie Gray, Luis Sinisterra and Crysencio Summerville to stabilise the finances and still winning promotion.

Staying in the top-flight will be an even harder task but if anyone can manage to do it and stay within the lines when it comes to financial regulations, it is the Whites under the American ownership.

The likes of Max Wober, Jack Harrison and Mateo Joseph could be sold to give them some extra leeway in the market and strengthen the squad, without harming their PSR position.

They need to be smart in their business, while also giving Farke and Co an edge on the pitch, but all the evidence so far, suggests that they can do exactly that.
