Liverpool’s Harvey Elliott was the hero for England U21s as they booked their place in the final of the U21 European Championships. The Young Lions came out as 2-1 winners against the Netherlands and will face either Germany or Italy in the final on Saturday.
Elliott was part of the squad who claimed the title in 2023, and is looking to play a big part in their defence of the title. Ahead of the game against the Netherlands, Elliott had scored twice throughout the tournament, in the group game against Czechia and in the 3-1 quarter-final win over Spain.
He was on the scoresheet again in the semi-final, scoring both goals in the second half, including the 85th-minute winner. Despite having the majority of chances in the first half, England had to settle for a 0-0 draw at half-time.
But Elliott got the breakthrough in the 62nd minute. He put England ahead with a powerful right-footed finish past the goalkeeper.
The Young Lions were pegged back 11 minutes later, when Noah Ohio scored with his first touch after coming on as a substitute. The game looked to be heading for extra time in the searing heat.
However, Elliott again stepped up. He drove at the Dutch defence before putting a left-footed strike into the bottom right-hand corner with just five minutes of normal time left to play.
It takes his tally for the tournament up to four, with the Liverpool man also scoring seven goals in qualification in 2023/24. His latest brace comes amid speculation over his future at Liverpool.
Elliott is attracting interest, having found himself on the fringes of Arne Slot’s team in the season just gone. Earlier this month, he admitted that he may need to leave the club.
"I don't really want to be wasting years on my career because it's a short career,” he said. “You don't know what's going to happen.
"I need to reflect. I need to see if I'm content in doing what I'm doing and how can I improve as a player because that's the most important thing.
"I just want to improve and be the best possible version of myself. If that's to go somewhere else, then it's a decision that I'm going to have to make and I just need to see what happens.
"Nothing makes me want to leave. I love the club, I love the fans, the team. I support them as well. But most importantly, it's just about what's best for my career."
His performances and goals for the Young Lions could prompt even more interest this summer. But it could also catch the eye of Slot ahead of pre-season, with Liverpool facing a decision over the player’s future.
