DETROIT -- Former Detroit Tigers utility man Tyler Nevin is extending his career in Japan.
Nevin, 28 has [agreed to a two-year extension with the Seibu Lions](https://www.mlbtraderumors.com/2025/06/tyler-nevin-signs-two-year-extension-with-npbs-seibu-lions.html) of Japan’s Nippon Professional Baseball that would take him through the 2027 season.
He is currently in his first season with the Lions, where he’s one of four foreign players on the roster. Former Tigers teammate Trey Wingenter is also pitching for the club.
Nevin spent most of the 2024 season with the Oakland Athletics, posting a .618 OPS (80 OPS+) in 278 plate appearances, with 10 doubles and seven home runs.
He had four separate stints with the Tigers in 2023. A consistent hitter at Triple-A Toledo, Nevin struggled in the majors, hitting .200 with a .622 OPS (72 OPS+) in 111 plate appearances. He tallied two homers, three doubles, and a triple while playing first base, third base, and both corner outfield spots.
Originally acquired in a cash trade with the Baltimore Orioles on Jan. 1, 2023, Nevin was [traded back to the Orioles for cash considerations](https://www.mlive.com/tigers/2024/01/tigers-trade-dfad-infielder-to-orioles-for-cash.html) on Jan. 22, 2024. He was later claimed off waivers by the Athletics.
Phil Nevin, Tyler’s father, played for the Tigers from 1995-97 and later coached in the organization. He was manager of the Los Angeles Angels in 2022-23.
