Liverpool confirms new coach appointment as former Wales manager hired

Liverpool has confirmed the appointment of former Wales manager Rob Page as the club's new U21s head coach.

The 50-year-old was most recently in charge of the Welsh national team, and led his nation to its first World Cup finals in over 60 years in 2022. Page has been out of work since June 2024 after being relieved of his duties with Wales.

He takes over Liverpool's U21s from Barry Lewtas, whose departure was confirmed earlier this month. Lewtas played a significant role in bringing through the likes of Conor Bradley and Jarell Quansah, while also working with Curtis Jones and Harvey Elliott.

Page arrives at Liverpool having spent four years in charge of Wales, during which time he took his country to the last-16 of Euro 2020 and to a first World Cup finals since 1958.

Before that, he coached Wales' U21, as well as managing Port Vale and Northampton Town after a playing career that saw him turn out for the likes of Watford, Sheffield United and Coventry City.

Page now joins Liverpool during a period of changes, with Lewtas having departed as U21s boss while U18s coach Marc Bridge-Wilkinson also departed at the end of the season. Arne Slot's first-team staff has also seen a change, with John Heitinga leaving to become Ajax manager.

“Rob brings a wealth of playing and coaching experience to a key role as young players look to bridge that gap from Academy prospect to first-team footballer," Liverpool academy director Alex Inglethorpe told the club's website.

“His recent achievements in guiding Wales to the last 16 at Euro 2020 before qualifying for the 2022 World Cup speak for themselves but perhaps less heralded is the work that took place during his time in charge of the national team, which saw numerous pathway players make it into the senior squad.

“This is something we have seen first-hand at Liverpool with several of our Academy players making significant progress on the international stage under Rob’s guidance.

“This level of experience in transitioning young footballers towards the professional game and on to the highest levels of domestic and international football will be a significant resource for all at the Academy, especially the players.

“Myself and all the staff are greatly looking forward to working with Rob as we endeavour to continue producing players capable of playing at the highest level and in the most demanding of arenas.”
