**Newcastle United have started to make headway in the summer transfer market, albeit in the form of having a bid rejected.**
While Newcastle aren't known for their speedy approach to transfers, this year, knowing that we have no PSR issues and a budget to spend as well as several targets identified, it's extra frustrating for fans as nothing seems to be happening.
There is, of course, the PSR deadline, which sees a new reporting cycle begin on the 1st July, which Newcastle may be waiting for, but there's nothing to stop the Magpies setting up deals to be completed next week.
So while it was good to see Newcastle actually making some sort of moves, the fact that they lowballed Forest in their approach for Anthony Elanga, which they immediately rejected without a counter, doesn't really move us any further forward.
Newcastle still have their eyes on their main three transfer targets

Indeed, there was even talk of Newcastle walking away from a potential deal for Elanga after having had their bid rejected, but thankfully, several outlets have since hinted that Newcastle will try again before they give up.
Journalist Luke Edwards has added his voice to that choir, insisting that Newcastle will go back with another bid, while also providing updates on João Pedro and Marc Guehi, who have been linked with a summer move to Newcastle for weeks.
> "Newcastle remain at the table - as it were - on Elanga deal. They are still in pursuit of Pedro and remain interested in Guehi. Asking prices - as they have been all summer - are the main issue.

> "But there are other targets who come into play the longer things drag on. With the market expected to start moving next week, I’m anticipating something happening then. When I’ll be on holiday. You’re welcome #nufc"
Eddie Howe wants two players in for when the squad returns to training on 7th July
----------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Newcastle's transfer activity was expected to 'ramp up' this week, and I suppose with our one bid, it has, but it's hardly the flurry of activity we were hoping for.
Our theory remains that they want to make sure the new PSR reporting cycle has started so they can be absolutely certain of their budget, but you'd think they would already be very aware of what they can spend.
We're not sure why we're trying to give them the benefit of the doubt, to be honest. Eddie Howe demanded quick action in the transfer market, and instead, we have our director of football leaving the club in the middle of a transfer window, and we're making silly bids for players that we know are way below the selling club's valuation.
Howe wanted at least two players in before they returned to training on 7th July, and while that is possible, it feels increasingly unlikely.
