Keith Hackett has shared his verdict on Flamengo gem Wesley Franca’s disciplinary record ahead of a potential move to Brighton this summer.

The 21-year-old full-back is currently away from the Brazilian giants at the Club World Cup, capturing plenty of attention across the world as the FIFA tournament continues in America.

According to The Telegraph (22 June), Fabian Hurzeler’s side have submitted a £20million bid for the young defender, who starred in the shock 3-1 win over Premier League side Chelsea.

It is understood that the Blues and Man City are both interested in Wesley this summer, the latter as an Achraf Hakimi alternative, but it is the Seagulls who have made the first move in attempting to secure his signature.

Wesley Franca’s disciplinary record possibly a concern

While the young full-back is now a fully-fledged international with Brazil, earning two caps against Colombia and Argentina in March, he lacks any European experience.

In addition to that, across the Brazilian Serie A and the Copa Libertadores this season, he has already accumulated five yellow cards in 12 total matches, suggesting he could potentially struggle in the Premier League.

That takes his total to 17 yellow cards and one sending-off in 132 games for Flamengo.

Despite this, Hackett believes there will be time and space for the player to develop if he makes the move to England this summer, being given the chance to get up to speed with the game.

With Mick Brown telling Football Insider that Pervis Estupinan wants to join Man United this summer, it makes sense to add another talented full-back to the squad ahead of the 2025/26 campaign.

Keith Hackett not concerned by Brighton’s possible new signing

Speaking exclusively to Football Insider about the Seagulls’ potential signing, the former referee said: “One of the things good about the English game, although we criticise it, is the education process for the players through the quality of the coaching staff, and Brighton have a brilliant reputation.

“Most clubs in the Premier League play fairly, and just the odd player in the division hits back at that. I think if a player comes to England, there should be no fear over his reputation.

Keith Hackett is hopeful of Wesley Franca making a positive start to life at Brighton.

“He’ll be met with the appropriate level of training and education. The systems in place are pretty good. When Marouane Fellaini came to England, we went to Everton to understand why he was picking up so many yellow cards.

“Get a referee in, and chat to them about their view on challenges. A lot can be learned, but I don’t worry about any players who come to the Premier League.”
