Patrick Mahomes’ Mom Randi Has Entered the Debate About Trans Athletes

Randi Mahomes, the mother of Kansas City Chiefs quarterback Patrick Mahomes, has weighed in on the debate surrounding trans athletes in sports.

"Being a woman and a girl and doing co-ed teams throughout my life and having fun in sports, there's a huge difference between male and female," Randi, 53, said on the "MOMetize Your Passion" podcast on Monday, June 23. "I just think it's not a fair matchup."

Randi explained she's "okay" with trans people existing, insisting, "I love everyone."

But she stopped short of promoting the inclusion of trans athletes in sports where they can compete with and against cisgender athletes of the same gender.

"When it comes to physical strength and our DNA, I don't think it's fair," Randi argued. "I do have a daughter and I do have sons. At the same age, they weren't doing the exact same thing."

She added, "Of course at some ages, they're equal. When they're 2, they're equal. Or 3 or 4 or 5. But as you develop, there is a difference."

Randi shares sons Patrick, 29, and Jackson, 25, with her ex-husband, Patrick Mahomes, Sr., who she divorced in 2006.

She later welcomed a daughter, Mia, 13, from a separate relationship after her divorce.

As a sort of olive branch, Randi suggested the creation of "a league that everyone that's transgender can go to and have a fair game or fair activity."

"I just think that women need to be with women, and men need to be with men," she said.

In April 2023, geneticist Dr. Eric Vilain pushed back against the idea of competitive advantage for trans athletes in an interview on the NPR podcast "Short Wave."

"The larger question really goes beyond a simple competitive advantage," Vilain said. "It's whether there is a disproportionate competitive advantage between trans and cis athletes. So there are all sorts of advantages coming into play for athletic abilities - their genetic advantages, metabolic differences, physical characteristics, height, for example, and all the socioeconomic access to better nutrition, better coaching, better training equipment."

Randi, who recently launched the Sports Parent Academy, was asked by podcast host Tirralan Watkins if she'd help "support" any trans athlete that wanted to participate in her program.

"If they needed support, this is someplace where they could go," Randi said. "We're always adding new things, so that might be something that we discuss."

According to its website, the Sports Parents Academy is a "comprehensive e-course designed to guide parents raising young athletes through every stage - from toddlerhood to the pros. Blending expert insights with real-life stories, the course is a go-to resource for families walking a similar path."

Tier 1 courses range in price from $245 to $447, with a premium package available for $1,497 and a VIP package available for $3,749.
