Arsenal have launched a £9.3 million bid for Brentford captain Christian Norgaard as Mikel Arteta looks to strengthen his midfield options this summer. The move, however, raises eyebrows due to a previous fiery clash between Norgaard and Arsenal winger Gabriel Martinelli earlier this year.

Norgaard, 31, has emerged as a cost-effective reinforcement following the departure of Jorginho to Flamengo and the expected exit of Thomas Partey. Known for his defensive solidity and leadership, the Danish international fits the profile Arsenal are targeting as they prepare for a long and competitive 2025/26 season.

However, his potential arrival could lead to an awkward reunion in preseason with Martinelli. During a 1-1 draw between Arsenal and Brentford at the Emirates in April, Norgaard’s reckless first-half challenge on Martinelli sparked outrage among Arsenal players and fans. Referee Simon Hooper issued only a yellow card, a decision that stood after a VAR check, leaving many at the Emirates furious.

Martinelli expressed his anger post-match, tellingSky Sports: “If my foot was on the floor, he could’ve broken my leg. He said he didn’t mean it—I believe him—but still, he could have broken my leg. For me, it was red.”

Arteta echoed the winger’s sentiment, saying: “My reaction says everything.”

Norgaard later apologised, insisting the tackle was unintentional and that Martinelli had accepted his apology. Speaking about the incident, he said: “He accepted my apology and shook my hand… It was never my intention to hurt anyone. Looking back, maybe it was a bit harder than I wanted it to be.”

Despite the previous tension, Arsenal appear eager to add Norgaard to their ranks. Talks are ongoing between Arsenal and Brentford, with the Danish midfielder reportedly open to the move. Norgaard has two years remaining on his contract and has been a key figure for Brentford since his arrival in 2019. However, with former Bees manager Thomas Frank now at Tottenham Hotspur, a new chapter could be on the horizon for the midfielder.

Should the transfer go through, Norgaard would join an already talent-rich Arsenal midfield, which includes Martin Ødegaard, Declan Rice, and Mikel Merino. Spanish international Martin Zubimendi is also expected to arrive from Real Sociedad in a £55 million deal, further intensifying competition for places.
