Arsenal Women have officially signed 18-year-old defender Cecily Wellesley-Smith to her first professional contract, marking a major milestone in the England youth international’s burgeoning career.

The deal, initially reported by Gooner Fanzine in May, confirms Wellesley-Smith’s promotion from the academy ranks to the senior setup of the UEFA Women’s Champions League holders.

Wellesley-Smith joined Arsenal’s academy in August 2024 at just 17 years old, having developed through Oxford United’s youth system. Her rapid rise through the ranks has seen her become a standout performer at centre-back, playing a crucial role in Arsenal Under-21s’ successful 2024/25 campaign, which culminated in them winning the PGA League Under-21 Division One title.

The young defender also gained valuable senior experience last season through a dual-registration agreement with her former club Oxford United, where she made 16 appearances in the FA Women’s National League South. She has regularly trained with Arsenal’s first team under head coach Renée Slegers, laying the groundwork for her professional breakthrough.

“I’m so proud to sign my first professional contract with Arsenal,” Wellesley-Smith told the club’s official website. “During my time here so far, I’ve loved learning from some of the best players and staff in the game and gaining an understanding of what it means to represent this great club. I’m looking forward to continuing to work hard, keep progressing and building as I begin my journey in the professional game.”

Wellesley-Smith is also making her mark on the international stage. After representing England at the UEFA Women’s Under-17 Championship in Sweden and the FIFA Under-17 World Cup in the Dominican Republic in 2024, she earned her England Under-19 debut this season — a testament to her growing reputation as one of the country’s top young defensive talents.

James Honeyman, Arsenal’s Head of Player Development, praised her progress and character:“Cecily has been at Arsenal for just over a year and has shown determination and passion for both the club and for football. We’re all proud of Cecily’s journey, especially the steps she has taken to begin her transition to the senior environment.”

Arsenal’s Director of Women’s Football, Clare Wheatley, echoed the sentiment: “Everyone at the club is thrilled to see another young player sign professional terms with us. Cecily has a fantastic work ethic and attitude, and we have no doubt these will stand her in good stead as she continues to grow and develop here at Arsenal.”

Wellesley-Smith’s former club, Oxford United, also celebrated the news. General Manager Gemma Sims expressed pride in her achievement: “We are all very proud of Cecily. Every coach and player who’s been part of her journey here at Oxford United will be pleased for her and wish her the best. She’s always been humble and hardworking — I’ve no doubt she’ll continue to grow and reach her potential.”

While there is speculation that Wellesley-Smith could go out on loan to a Women’s Championship (WSL2) side for the 2025/26 season to gain more first-team minutes, her immediate focus is expected to be on Arsenal’s pre-season programme as she takes her next steps in red and white.
