Surprise Spurs-Pacers trade just crushed Wemby’s dream reunion

The San Antonio Spurs and the Indiana Pacers made the first trade of the 2025 NBA Draft. The Silver and Black sent their 38th selection of the second round to Indy for the rights to a future second-round pick originally held by the Sacramento Kings in 2030. That's bad news for Victor Wembanyama's friend from France, Maxime Reynaud.

Reynaud and Wemby are good pals and even worked out together in recent months. The Stanford center started the draft process as a second-round projection, but he's helped himself since evaluations have begun. When you look at different mock drafts, Reynaud is no longer sure to be available on the second draft night, and that could be why SA decided to move the pick.

Spurs are likely to target a big man in the first round

When the Spurs won the draft lottery, everything changed. If they had landed around the eighth spot where they were originally projected, I think they would have targeted a shooter. Someone like Kon Knueppel or Tre Johnson could have been options for 210's finest, but when that ping pong ball dropped and they got the second pick, you had to adjust.

Harper is too good to pass up, and in that middle area, you'd be better off taking a big man. That's where some of the most talented ones in this class are. Derik Queen, Thomas Sorber, and Khaman Maluach are all skilled bigs who San Antonio could target. They may need to move up a few spots to get Maluach, but based on numerous reports, that's something they've explored.

The Spurs know they need to solidify their frontline. Victor Wembanyama needs backup, and the players they've had to fill that role haven't lived up to expectations. It's time to stop looking for stop-gaps and put some resources into the position, and that could very well happen tonight.
