AUSTIN, Texas – Texas guard Tre Johnson was selected by the ________ with the ______ pick in the 2025 NBA Draft.
The Garland, Texas native had easily the best freshman season for a Longhorn since Kevin Durant's one-year stay on the Forty Acres in 2006-07.
Johnson was named the Associated Press' Southeastern Conference Newcomer of the Year and landed a spot on the AP's All-SEC First Team.
He led the SEC in scoring, averaging 19.9 points per game on 42.7% shooting, including a 39.7% clip from three-point range, while hitting 87.1% of his free throws this season.
Over the Longhorns' 36 contests, Johnson was durable, appearing in 33 games (33 starts) – only missing a trio of non-conference contests early in the season for precautionary reasons.
Johnson was also named the SEC's Freshman of the Year by a vote of the league's coaches. Prior to his final collegiate game, Johnson spoke with Horns247 and talked about what he learned during his lone season with the Longhorns, where the team went 19-16 (6-12 in SEC play) and lost in the NCAA Tournament's First Four to Xavier.
"I learned how hard you really have to play to win," Johnson said. "I feel like I didn't know how hard you have to play to win a college game when I first got here. Being in some of the close games that we've had made me realize that you can't take any plays off or anything like that. You have to play extremely hard just to win one game."
Johnson claimed five SEC Freshman of the Week honors during the 2024-25 season (Nov. 11, Jan. 27, Feb. 3, Feb. 17 and Mar. 3).
Johnson's selection makes him the highest draft pick from the Longhorns' program since former big man Mo Bamba went sixth overall in 2018, being chosen by the Orlando Magic.
The last Longhorn to be selected among the top five picks in the NBA Draft was former Texas great Tristan Thompson, who was chosen fourth overall by the Cleveland Cavaliers in 2011.
Former Texas standouts Kevin Durant and LaMarcus Aldridge still remains as the highest-ever Longhorns selected, as both players went second overall. Aldridge was chosen second by the Portland Trailblazers in 2006 and Durant went in the following year's draft to the Seattle SuperSonics (now Oklahoma City Thunder).
Johnson's selection snaps a three-year drought for the program. Prior to tonight, the last Texas players to be drafted came in 2021, where former Longhorn forward Kai Jones went 19th overall to the New York Knicks and Greg Brown (43rd overall) and Jericho Sims (58th overall) were chosen in the second round.
