Dallas Mavericks named ‘leading suitor’ for All-Star point guard

The Dallas Mavericks are just hours away from making Cooper Flagg the new face of their franchise, effectively filling the glaring hole left empty after the Luka Doncic trade. While the Mavericks could be landing a new potential superstar with the first overall pick in the 2025 NBA Draft, they still have other needs to fill, such as finding a secondary playmaker to work with Kyrie Irving.

Though like many other teams over the past few days, the Mavericks have been busy identifying trade targets and free agency solutions to address their biggest needs.

Now, according to The Stein Line, the Mavericks have emerged as a “leading suitor” to sign free agent point guard/shooting guard D’Angelo Russell this offseason.

The one-time All-Star has bounced all over the league since arriving as the second overall pick in the 2015 NBA Draft. However, when watching D-Lo operate, his skills are very evident as a left-handed sharpshooter capable of hitting three-point shots at a high volume to go along with his impressive ball-handling ability.

However, Russell tends to get himself into trouble with his shot selection at times, and he doesn’t offer much defensively. Still, in the right system, with the right mix of players around him, the 29-year-old scoring guard can be an effective player who impacts the win column. He could be a great fit off the bench in Dallas.
