The Wizards selected Texas guard Tre Johnson with the sixth pick in the NBA draft on Wednesday night.
The 19-year-old was widely considered one of the top shooters in the class after posting 19.9 points per game during his lone season with the Longhorns, averaging 39.7% shooting from three-point range.
“Just knowing how hard I work, how consistent I am with it, I’m going to keep doing what’s been working,” Johnson said on the ESPN broadcast.
Despite finishing with the second-worst record in the NBA, an unlucky lottery draw dropped the Wizards to the sixth pick.
Washington general manager Will Dawkins watched top prospects like the Duke duo of Cooper Flagg and Kon Knueppel and the Rutgers pair of Dylan Harper and Ace Bailey find new homes before the Wizards were on the clock.
Johnson joins a young core that features 2023 first-round pick Bilal Coulibaly and a trio of players coming off of strong rookie seasons: 2024 second overall selection Alex Sarr, guard Bub Carrington and forward Kyshawn George.
The Wizards also hold the 18th pick in Wednesday night’s first round. The rebuilding squad traded its only second-round pick, the 40th selection, to the New Orleans Pelicans on Tuesday.
