NEW ORLEANS, La. (WLBT) - The New Orleans Pelicans continued to make moves in the NBA Draft, acquiring the 13th pick from the Atlanta Hawks to select Maryland center Derik Queen.
The Pelicans came into the draft with the 7th overall pick, where they selected Oklahoma guard Jeremiah Fears, and the 23rd pick before trading that away, as well as a 2026 unprotected first-round pick.
Last season, Queen was an integral part to the Terrapins season, averaging 16.5 points, 9 rebounds, 1.1 steals and 1.1 blocks a game.
Queen was a force on the offensive end in his freshman year, leading the team in points.
Defensively, he has work to do, but draft analysts believe he has the size, athleticism and versatility to eventually excel on that end of the court.
