There are a wide range of opinions on the NBA Draft selection of South Carolina star Collin Murray-Boyles by the Toronto Raptors. Some of those opinions can be found at this link, diving into what analysts were saying about the selection. But there are others, too.
CBS college basketball insider and 247Sports director of scouting Adam Finkelstein gave the Toronto Raptors a "B" grade for the pick of Murray-Boyles. CBS Sports columnist and Eye on College Basketball host Gary Parrish didn't give a grade, but CBS Sports HQ basketball analyst and former NBA coach Avery Johnson gave the pick a "C-minus."
What Meechie is saying about Eli | Top target feeling love from Paris, Gamecocks
"I like Collin Murray-Boyles more than most as a prospect. The knock on him is that he's an undersized big, 6-foot-6 without shoes on, and he's not a three-point shooter. He has a 7-foot-plus wingspan. He's very strong, so he plays functionally bigger than he is. He's a terrific rebounder. He's also an incredibly high processor of the game. Super, super smart, and versatile defensively. I buy into all of that. What concerns me in Toronto is that's very similar to Scotty Barnes, just not quite as good. So again, I understand you don't pick for fit, but fit becomes important when you're trying to maximize an asset, so that's what concerns me just a little bit about this but just to be clear, I'm a fan of CMB." - CBS Sports commenter Adam Finkelstein
"Fit is especially important with a player like this, because he has to have the right people around him to work and the right coaching staff that believes in him to put him in position to work. He is an unusual top 10 pick. How often are you ever going to describe a top 10 pick as an undersized big who can't shoot? He's so good at the other stuff, though. Incredible feel for the game, he processes stuff really well. Evaluators fell in love in love with the other stuff he brings to the table. Not comparing him to Draymond Green, but a lot of people talk about him the same way - flawed player, undersized for where he is on the court, but he just knows how to get things done. Collin Murray-Boyles has a lot of those same characteristics." - CBS commenter Gary Parrish
"I give this pick a C-minus. I really don't necessarily like the fit here. When you look at the Raptors, they need scoring and they need outside shooting. I don't believe they needed an undersized center with the roster as currently constructed. This kid, he has a high motor, he'll rebound the basketball, but his outside shot is very questionable. He's an undersized big. Not really sure what Toronto is doing here. I'm happy for the young man, but I'm not necessarily crazy about this pick." - CBS commenter Avery Johnson
Coming out of high school, Murray-Boyles had a four-star rating in the 247Sports Composite at 0.9629, good for No. 90 nationally. He was ranked as the No. 108 player in the country by 247Sports with a four-star rating of 90.
