'In the running' - Wolves join race to sign £10m defender - but Brighton also keen

The latest transfer news as Wolves and Brighton are battle to sign a talented wing-back.

Wolverhampton Wanderers are upping the ante with their transfer business, reportedly joining the race to sign a new left wing-back.

Vitor Pereira is now several weeks into his first summer window as Wolves boss and he’s completed one signing so far, Fer Lopez from Celta Vigo in a stunning £19.5 million deal. The Old Gold have several other positions they want to improve this summer, though, including the goalkeeper, right-back, centre-back, attacking midfield and striker spots.

The first priority is to replace Matheus Cunha and Rayan Ait-Nouri following their departures to Manchester United and Manchester City respectively. Neither player’s shoes are going to be easy to fill but Wanderers have a huge budget to work with, at least, and are going to try their best to make their squad competitive.

Wolves enter race for in-demand defender

There has now been an update on the left wing-back front as French publication Jeunes Football reports Wolves have added a new player to their shortlist of potential Ait-Nouri replacements. AZ Alkmaar’s David Moller Wolfe, valued at around €12 million (£10.2m), is said to be of real interest to Wanderers.

Moller Wolfe has been a regular starter for AZ ever since he joined two years ago, racking up 92 appearances, four goals and 10 assists in 92 matches across all competitions. The 12-time Norway international has been one of the best left-backs in the Eredivisie for the past two seasons and now he could be on his way to one of Europe’s top leagues.

Wolves hold a strong interest, however they are not on their own in pursuit of Moller Wolfe. Jeunes Football’s report names Brighton & Hove Albion, Bayer Leverkusen, Borussia Dortmund and Stade Rennais as four other teams firmly in the race, so the competition is fierce.

How would Moller Wolfe fit in at Wolves?

If Moller Wolfe were to make the move to Molineux, he’d likely be a guaranteed starter right away. Although he has played at left-back in every single appearance for AZ, he would step into a slightly more advanced left wing-back role and push forward during attacks, just like Ait-Nouri did.

Moller Wolfe is renowned in the Netherlands and Norway as a great passer of the ball. He’s also praised for his strong defensive positioning and his physicality. If anything, Wolves could benefit from having Moller Wolfe instead of Ait-Nouri as their former left wing-back sometimes lacked the necessary defensive attributes to help the back three.

Having made 10 appearances in the Europa League and played a further six games in the Conference League, Moller Wolfe is used to the pressure of big fixtures. Although Wolves aren’t in Europe, every match in the Premier League demands so much mentally as well as physically.

If you’re not already convinced that Moller Wolfe is the right choice, then just take a double-take at his name. It’s like a match made in heaven, isn’t it? Would you like to see Wolfe join the Pack? Let us know in the comments.
