Former Arsenal player William Gallas has been speaking about his ex-club’s transfer business

Former Arsenal defender William Gallas believes his former club did not want to win the Premier League badly enough due to their decision not to sign a striker in recent transfer windows.

The Gunners have finished second in the Premier League for three-straight seasons with a lack of firepower proving their undoing last term as Liverpool were crowned champions with just 84 points - and with four games to spare.

Viktor Gyokeres and Benjamin Sesko are two of the biggest names linked with a move to North London and either of the duo will certainly make Arsenal’s attacking threat much more potent.

Gallas made 142 appearances for Arsenal during a four-year spell between 2006 and 2010. He arrived at the Gunners following a five-year stint with Chelsea, where he won the Premier League twice.

William Gallas discusses Arsenal transfer needs

Speaking about what the Gunners need in the transfer window, Gallas told Genting Casino: “Arsenal have been looking for a striker for, I don’t know exactly how long, but I know that a top class striker should have arrived at Arsenal two or three years ago, and they didn’t sign one. They obviously didn’t think it was that important to add a top class striker.

“And I think that, when you look at their season, unfortunately, they didn’t want the Premier League badly enough on a couple of occasions where they came close - last season, and also two years ago. They didn’t want it enough to go and add that last missing piece of the puzzle.

“So now they are being linked with strikers again, just like they were in January. I hope they do get one of the strikers they want, because I hope they want the same thing every fan wants, which is to win the Premier League next season.”

Arsenal face tough battle to win Premier League title next season

Arsenal are expected to challenge for the title next campaign alongside Manchester City and Liverpool. Both of the Gunners’ rivals are making big moves in the transfer market with the likes of Rayan Cherki and Florian Wirtz moving to England.

With City and Liverpool both building stronger squads, Arsenal’s need to sign a striker is more imperative than ever. While no deal has been completed on that front, the Gunners are at least looking to correcting their mistake from previous windows.

The Gunners scored just 69 goals last season which was three fewer than third-placed City and 17 behind Liverpool. The likes of Brentford and Brighton and Hove Albion netted 66 goals each so where just a few behind the Gunners while Newcastle United scored 68 goals. All three clubs had reliable goal-scorers such as Alexander Isak, Joao Pedro, Danny Welbeck, Yoane Wissa and Bryan Mbeumo.

The Gunners still scored more but adding a striker will most definitely add more firepower and goals to their line-up next term.
