'More to come': Joe Cole says Liverpool have a young player similar to Phil Foden who can go 'to the very top'

Liverpool have always had an impressive academy with many of their club legends starting from the bottom and making it all the way to the first team.

When Jurgen Klopp was in charge, integrating the youth players into Liverpool’s first-team squad always had a major part to play in how their seasons panned out.

Players such as Caoimhin Kelleher, Conor Bradley and Curtis Jones were all handed their first-team debuts by the German with all three becoming important players for the Reds over the years.

As well as developing their own talent, the Anfield outfit have also prised some players away from their Premier League rivals if they feel like they have enough potential.

And, for one Liverpool man, this is exactly what happened, and now, he’s tearing it up on the international stage.

Joe Cole lauds Harvey Elliott for his performances at the Under-21s World Cup

Harvey Elliott has been in fine form during the Under-21s World Cup, with the Englishman seemingly having a point to prove after Arne Slot chose against giving him much playing time last season.

Players such as Dominik Szoboszlai took the limelight, which left the former Fulham man on the sidelines more often than he would’ve wanted.

However, after his performances at the Under-21s World Cup for England, he’s certainly making a name for himself with former Liverpool man Joe Cole believing that he’s set to go to the very top.

“Anyone outside the top six he comfortably walks in and becomes one of the main players and then once he has two years at that level, he can come back to the very top at a club like Liverpool and compete,” he said in quotes summarised by The Standard.

“He left Fulham as a young man. His learning has been spread out, very similar to [Phil] Foden where he was used sparingly over a longer period of time, there is more to come from him.

“Performing like he has done at this tournament, I think there will be teams all around Europe looking for Harvey Elliott agent’s number and thinking maybe he’s right for them.”

Liverpool have to let Harvey Elliott go this summer

When Klopp was the man at the helm, Elliott played a vital role in his set-up and was used in almost every other game.

The Englishman’s preferred position is attacking midfield, but there have been times when he’s been used on the right wing.

However, if Liverpool want to continue being competitive and the team to beat in the Premier League, they have to look at selling players, and Elliott should be on the chopping block.

Now, that’s not because he isn’t good enough, but with the arrival of Florian Wirtz from Bayer Leverkusen and the fact that Szoboszlai is set to stay, there hardly seems to be any chance of him earning more playing time.

Although Elliott’s sale would no doubt hurt fans, it’s the best thing for him at the moment, so his development can continue.

Wherever he’s shipped off to, as long as Liverpool add a buy-back clause into the deal, like they have with Jarell Quansah, they’d be setting themselves up nicely, especially if his form from the Under-21s World Cup carries on.
