Former striker Jermain Defoe has instructed Liverpool midfielder Harvey Elliott to leave the club and 'express himself' after his England under 21 heroics on Wednesday night. Elliott has been linked previously with a move to and has admitted that
On Wednesday, in Slovakia, Elliott netted twice either side of Noah Ohio's equaliser to send Lee Carsley's young Lions into the final of the under 21 Euros; it was a trophy Elliott inspired the side to win two years ago and they'll look to defend their title against Germany on Saturday evening.
Upon his return, with the Reds having acquired Florian Wirtz from Bayer Leverkusen, and with existing teammates Alexis MacAllister, Ryan Gravenberch, Dominik Szboszlai and Curtis Jones already limiting Elliott's minutes, it's anticipated that the Fulham academy product will need to consider his options.
Defoe, the former Tottenham Hotspur and England forward, was working for as a pundit on Wednesday and he reasoned that Elliott is too talented an individual to be only receiving the game-time currently being afforded to him by Arne Slot on Merseyside and that he must source regular first-team football elsewhere.
"There'll be a lot of clubs watching this tournament," Defoe pointed out. "We said it before, he's too good to not be playing. When you're producing in big tournaments like this against the best players, the two goals that we saw this evening, he's a top, top player.
"For him, he just needs to go out and play, get himself in a team where he's one of the main players, and just go out and express yourself and show how good you are because this performance tonight, it's amazing."
Defoe's punditry counterpart Joe Cole agreed; he feels as though there are even more gears for Elliott to shift through once he's earning starts and regular minutes on a weekly basis.
"I love the lad," he added. "I think he plays football the right way and I'm really excited for him. Not just for this final, but I'm excited for his future as well, for next year.
"He's done a great job for Liverpool, and if he decides to move on, I still feel there's levels. For a player to come to a tournament and do what he's done, there's levels for him to go up again, and I'd love to see him playing with that kind of passion and happiness on his face every week."
