Man City Are Set To Benefit If Premier League Rival Secure £40M Transfer

Manchester City will receive a percentage of the fee if Burnley agree to sell goalkeeper James Trafford to Newcastle.

Journalist Fabrizio Romano has confirmed that talks are underway about a potential transfer to St James’ Park with negotiations expected to ramp up at the beginning of July.

Trafford has been a long-term target for Magpies boss Eddie Howe, who tried to sign him when the Clarets were relegated from the Premier League at the end of the 2023/24 season.

A bid of £16m was reportedly lodged, but Burnley rejected the proposal at the time. They had paid an initial £15m to sign him from City just twelve months before.

Trafford’s asking price has skyrocketed

Last year, Burnley were said to be holding out for around £30m but that figure has since risen to £40m, following the 22-year-old’s exploits in the Championship.

Trafford kept 29 clean sheets, with Burnley ending the season having conceded just 16 times in 46 league games. That outstanding defensive record helped Scott Parker’s side return to the top flight at the first time of asking. They finished 2nd behind Leeds in the table.

If Newcastle do pay £40m, the Manchester Evening News claim City will receive £5m, as the percentage due to the club is 12.5%.

Man City have already benefited from a sell-on clause this summer

The Cityzens received £2m from Ipswich Town after Chelsea triggered the £30m release clause in Liam Delap‘s contract earlier this month.

It should be pointed out that there is also a buyback clause on Trafford, as there was on Delap, but it does look like Guardiola’s will allow the keeper to secure a move to Newcastle.

City’s academy has raised considerable amounts of money for the club over the last three years, close to £200m in fact, and that has meant there are no issues with PSR.
