Patrick Mahomes has become a sports demigod in Kansas City for his work with the Kansas City Chiefs, but Texas will always be close to his heart. After all, he was born in Tyler, Texas. Plus, he played college football in Lubbock for the Texas Tech Red Raiders before turning pro and building a Pro Football Hall of Fame-worthy resume.
So when the Dallas Mavericks took expectedly took Cooper Flagg first overall in the 2025 NBA draft in Brooklyn Wednesday night, it was just natural for Mahomes to gravitate to it.
After going through the heartbreak of losing Luka Doncic in a trade with the Los Angeles Lakers and the injury to Kyrie Irving, Mavericks fans have a reason to smile, with Flagg taking his talents from Durham to Dallas.
Before getting selected by the Mavericks, Flagg spent a season with the Duke Blue Devils and lived up to the hype. Although Duke did not win a national title with Flagg, his talent on both ends of the floor was on full display under head coach Jon Scheyer. In his first and only season with the Blue Devils, Flagg averaged 19.2 points on a 48.1 percent shooting from the field, 7.5 rebounds and 4.2 assists per outing.
