Botafogo goalkeeper eyed by Manchester United

Manchester United’s goalkeeping department could be heading for a shake-up this summer as Ruben Amorim continues to retool his squad after a turbulent end to the 2024/25 season.

With uncertainty surrounding the future of Andre Onana, and Altay Bayindir expected to depart in search of regular football, United’s recruitment team has been working quietly behind the scenes to identify reliable and cost-effective alternatives.

While United have previously held talks over Aston Villa’s World Cup-winning keeper Emiliano Martinez, the situation is still ongoing.

Attention has now turned to a star from outside the Premier League, with a familiar South American name re-emerging on United’s radar.

According to Football Insider, Manchester United are stepping up their interest in Botafogo shot-stopper John Victor after his standout performance at this summer’s Club World Cup.

The 29-year-old helped his Brazilian side defeat European champions PSG — keeping a clean sheet in the process — and became only the second goalkeeper after Liverpool’s Alisson to shut out the French giants this year.

Victor’s performances haven’t gone unnoticed.

United scouts were present at the tournament and have reportedly recommended the towering six-foot-five keeper as a serious option if Onana is sold in the coming weeks.

The Brazilian is available for a modest £5.8million thanks to a release clause agreed when he chose to stay at Botafogo for the Club World Cup despite having European offers back in January.

United’s admiration for John Victor dates back to last season, when he played a key role in Botafogo’s Copa Libertadores and Brazilian league double.

His representative Pedro Gutierrez has confirmed interest from across Europe, including Spurs, but stated that Victor’s dream has always been to play in the Premier League.

With Victor’s form peaking and his price tag relatively low, United could move swiftly to beat rivals to his signature.

Should Onana exit, Amorim could have a reliable new No.1 in place sooner rather than later.
