“It’s brought me luck” – Newcastle United midfielder explains why he’s training with former club

Newcastle United midfielder Joelinton saw his season cut short in April, after he suffered a knee injury.

Prior to that setback, the Brazil international was a regular under Eddie Howe and played 37 games last season, managing four goals and three assists.

The 28-year-old is currently in Recife, Brazil, enjoying the break while also making sure he remains in shape ahead of his return to Newcastle United.

He was born in Aliança, which is an hour drive from Recife, and was a graduate of Sport Recife’s academy. Thursday’s edition of Jornal do Commercio reports the Newcastle player has been spending time at his former club.

Sport Recife promoted him to their first team in 2014 and sold him to TSG Hoffenheim a year later. Joelinton spent five years with the German club and left them for the Magpies in 2019.

The South American has been meeting his former colleagues and using the club’s facilities.

On returning to his former club, he said: “Whenever I’m on vacation, I come here to train. This has happened every season and it has brought me luck. I’m very happy to be back home.”

Joelinton has already recovered from the knee injury and will be ready to start pre-season under Howe’s orders next month.
