Football finance expert Kieran Maguire goes on social media rant about Psr not being fit for…

· 26 June 2025, 10:30

**The Premier League's Profit and Sustainability Rules (PSR) are the most annoying thing about the modern game, far worse than VAR and Chelsea's transfer strategy.**

Newcastle United have by far the wealthiest owners in the Premier League, but last year, the club had to sell one of its most promising young players in Elliot Anderson, to comply with PSR and avoid a points deduction. Now, Anderson is dazzling at the U21 European Championships and making Newcastle fans dream of what might have been.

TalkSPORT's Simon Jordan, not too long ago, spoke about how PSR is absolutely [not about sustainability](https://nufcfeed.com/more-money-than-god-simon-jordan-is-out-there-speaking-sense-again-regarding-newcastle-united-and-psr-1190436) if Newcastle, who have a bottomless pit of money to draw from, can't be allowed to spend.

PSR is, and always has been, about protecting the cartel six. Those top clubs hold more power than the other 14 Premier League clubs combined, and now Kieran Maguire has taken aim at PSR in a magnificent rant on X.

Aston Villa are contemplating selling their women's team back to themselves, sparking a rant by Kieran Maguire

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

In response to the news that Aston Villa are looking at selling their women's team back to themselves to avoid PSR after Chelsea did so last year, Maguire said it's time to scrap PSR.

> "The Premier League PSR rules are about as fit for purpose as a chocolate teapot. Chelsea FC Holdings made a profit of £128m in 23/24 after selling the women’s team to itself. The parent company BlueCo 22 (which owns the men’s team, the women’s team and…Strasbourg) made a loss of £430m in the same period as cannot include intra group transactions in the group accounts. Richard Masters keeps a straight face and says Chelsea have not broken any rules…because the rules on these types of deals are full of loopholes.

>

> "If I was Everton or Forest would be livid."

By referencing Everton, Maguire is, of course, talking about the points deduction they faced for breaching PSR, which almost saw them relegated.

Kieran Maguire calls for PSR to be scrapped

-------------------------------------------

Maguire went on to say what fans of the 'other 14' have been saying for years.

> "The rules were introduced to stop the ‘Big Six’ becoming a ‘Big Eight’ or ‘Big Ten’ and make it difficult for ambitious/aspirational clubs such as Villa, Newcastle & Forest from using owner money to challenge the existing elite by creating a glass ceiling. Either have rules which have been stress tested to stop exploitation of related party transactions loopholes etc OR scrap them totally. What we have is neither and it’s a mess where creative accountants and lawyers are worth as much as players."

We absolutely couldn't agree more with Kieran Maguire. We aren't against there being a system in place to stop clubs 'buying' success, but at the same time, if a club has the means, they shouldn't be restricted on their spending by an arbitrary line in the sand, which, by the way, hasn't moved since the rules were introduced in 2012. £105 million losses over a three-year period in a time when Liverpool have just bought one player for £115 million is absolutely insane.

We obviously don't want to see clubs overspend to the point where they go bust, but at the end of the day, if owners are stupid enough to do that, why should someone else stop them? It's a risk they're willing to take so let them take it and then let them deal with the consequences.
