Ederson says the chance to make history and become the first winners of the new look FIFA Club World Cup is acting as an extra special motivation for City.

Rodri: I feel strong and so happy to be back playing for City

The Brazilian keeper, who was part of the City side that lifted the Club World Cup in its previous iteration back in 2023, has helped Pep Guardiola’s side make a flying start to the newly expanded 32-team tournament in the United States.

City tackle European rivals Juventus in our final Group G game in Orlando on Thursday having won our opening two games without conceding a goal.

If City can overcome the Old Lady amidst the Florida heat, it means we would win the group and have the advantage of also playing our next match in Orlando going into knockout stages.

And as he looked ahead to that mouth-watering game and the tournament as whole, Ederson said the City squad were inspired to try and become the first-ever winners of the new-look FIFA Club World Cup.

“It’s really important for us to try and make history and win this competition,” the City keeper declared.

“It’s a new competition, and a new trophy.

“No other team has won this trophy, and we have the opportunity to become the first team to win this trophy.

“We will try and train really hard [to achieve that goal].

“We work every day to win every game and finish top of the group.

“The team is working very hard to win this competition.

“Every player is focused on training and on the game and its really good for the club.

“I think we have an advantage if we [can] win the group. But if we finish first or second it will be big teams in the next round, but we will be ready for everything.”

Reijnders: FIFA Club World Cup has helped me quickly settle in at City

It’s a new-look City squad that are competing in the United States with June signings Rayan Ait-Nouri, Tijjani Reijnders, Rayan Cherki and Marcus Bettinelli all having joined the Club earlier this month.

And for Ederson – who has been at the Etihad since 2017 – the quartet’s arrival has had a positive effect on the rest of the squad.

“For me it’s more a new season as new players have come in and we have started the preparation for next season,” Ederson added.

“It’s so important now we have a big group. Normally we have 22 or 23 players but now we have 27

“We have two teams; the new players have come with a new mentality and a new hunger to win games and win trophies and it’s so important for us.”
