Joelinton return date hint as Newcastle United midfielder spotted in former club's colours

Newcastle United are set to have Joelinton available from the beginning of pre-season.

A knee injury forced the Brazilian to sit out the remaining five matches of last season as the Magpies went on to secure Champions League qualification.

Joelinton had been managing the issue since the beginning of the year, causing him to miss the whole of February before returning to play a starring role in Newcastle’s 2-1 Carabao Cup final victory over eventual Premier League champions Liverpool.

With his knee heavily strapped, Joelinton was, for a while, able to play through the pain barrier, however the pain became too much in training, 24 hours before United faced Ipswich Town at St James’ Park on April 26.

The 28-year-old was sent to see a specialist and although it was deemed a minor injury, the advice was to sit out the rest of the campaign.

Joelinton spotted training at former club Sport Recife

Since being sidelined, Joelinton has spent most of his time back in Brazil. He’s enjoyed a lengthy period of relaxation but in recent days has gradually turned his focus back to the new season.

Joelinton has been using the facilities at the club where his professional career started. Sport Recife have uploaded a video on their Instagram page of the player out on the grass and doing an indoor exercise on his knee, along with the caption “It's always a pleasure to see you here, Big Joe! Our training centre welcomed the player once again to train during his vacation. A great day to catch up with @joelinton34! ❤️‍🔥”

Joelinton replied: “My home. Thank you for everything...and to all the people who are part of the largest in the northeast ❤️ 🖤”

It’s 10 years since Joelinton left Recife to pursue a career in Europe. He joined Bundesliga side Hoffenheim, which included a loan spell at Austrian outfit Rapid Vienna before completing a then club-record £40m transfer to Newcastle United in 2019.

When will Joelinton return injury?

Prior to the final game of last season against Everton, Newcastle boss Eddie Howe said he envisaged Joelinton returning in time for pre-season, which gets underway on Monday, July 7. The clips from Recife suggest that will indeed be the case.

“He's had another injection in his knee which was always on the cards potentially for him,” Howe said in May. “So he's in a knee brace only as a protection from that injection really.

“He's making good progress. So we envisage that he will be back for pre-season with no problems.”

Newcastle don’t play their first pre-season game until they visit Scottish Premiership champions Celtic on Saturday, July 19. From there, Howe’s side visit Singapore and South Korea to face Arsenal, the K-League All-Stars and Tottenham Hotspur before returning to home soil to take on Spanish duo Espanyol and Atletico Madrid.

The 2025-26 Premier League campaign then commences with an away trip to Aston Villa on Saturday, August 16 (kick-off 12:30).
