Leeds United are already showing their ambition in the summer transfer window, and could be set to further strengthen their squad imminently.

Jaka Bijol has arrived as another key signing this summer, with the centre-back joining from Udinese, and he may not be the only defender to arrive.

Leeds are well aware of the difficulty of the Premier League, and despite boasting a strong defensive record in the Championship, they need to improve further if they are to stay up.

With this in mind, Leeds are now targeting another defender alongside Bijol, and this will strengthen a key area of the squad.

Leeds are interested in a player from Daniel Farke’s old club Borussia Monchengladbach, with left-back Lukas Ullrich now targeted for a move.

Ullrich is part of the Germany Under-21 squad who will face England in the final of the European Championships this summer, and provided one assist in two games.

The 21-year-old enjoyed an excellent breakthrough to become a key player for Gladbach last season, and he could be a long-term option for Leeds.

Ullrich could replace Junior Firpo

Leeds were dealt a blow as left-back Junior Firpo decided not to extend his contract, and he appears set to join Real Betis this summer.

Losing such an important player for free is far from ideal, but 49ers Enterprises are willing to invest on his replacement as a matter of urgency.

This could see a move for an in-demand talent such as Ullrich accelerated, and should they complete a deal, it will highlight the 49ers’ ambitions for this summer.

Leeds will also need to sign a goalkeeper, and the owners clearly do not want to leave any glaring holes in the squad, in order to give Farke the best chance of success next season.

Ullrich could slot straight in for Firpo, but while he showed signs of his attacking prowess at youth level, it may take some time before he can replicate the Betis-bound star’s creative output in the top flight.
