Newcastle United are set for a financial boost as a £72million loss is about to drop out of their profit and sustainability (PSR) calculations, sources have told Football Insider.

The Tyneside club have struggled to comply with the PSR rules since Saudi Arabia’s Public Investment Fund (PIF) secured its £305million takeover in October 2021.

Under the PSR rules, Premier League sides are only permitted to lose £105million over a rolling three-year period.

Newcastle avoided a PSR breach for 2023-24 after selling Elliot Anderson and Yankuba Minteh to Nottingham Forest and Brighton ahead of last year’s 30 June accounting deadline.

Those deals ensured the north-east giants only made an £11million loss across the 2023-24 financial year.

Eddie Howe’s side have been hampered by their £72million loss for 2022-23, with the amount spent on transfers relatively modest over the past couple of years at St James’ Park.

However, that heavy loss is about to drop out of Newcastle’s three-year PSR calculation from July onwards, handing the club a major boost in their efforts to improve their squad this summer.

Newcastle could land £100m windfall

Newcastle smashed their club-record revenue in 2023-24 after their overall turnover surged from £250million to £320million.

That was largely driven by their return to the Champions League and a significant uplift in commercial revenue, which improved from £47million in 2022-23 to £86million.

Howe’s side are set to feature in the Champions League again next season after finishing fifth in the Premier League table.

Finance expert Stefan Borson told Football Insider Newcastle could generate up to £100million from the competition.

Newcastle told to increase Anthony Elanga bid

Nottingham Forest winger Anthony Elanga has emerged as one of the key targets as Howe looks to improve his attacking options this summer.

Football Insider revealed on 15 June Forest have told Newcastle to increase their offer for Elanga.

The Magpies must now make a bid of at least £50million to land the 23-year-old.

The Sweden international registered six goals and 11 assists as he featured in every Premier League game for Forest in the 2024-25 season.
