Manchester United defender secures free transfer ahead of official release next week

Man Utd are set to release nine players in the summer transfer window.

Sam Murray has secured a move to National League side Carlisle United after he was set for release by Manchester United at the end of the season. The 20-year-old was one of ten players named on the club's retained list earlier in the month after he was not handed a new contract by the club.

United will officially release nine of those players when their respective contracts come to an end next week, though veteran goalkeeper Tom Heaton has agreed to a new one-year deal with the club. Murray was free to negotiate with clubs ahead of becoming a free agent and has officially signed for Carlisle ahead of their first season back in non-league.

The young left-back will be coached by United legend Mark Hughes who has chosen to remain in charge of the Cumbrian side in the National League. Murray was a regular for United at U21 level last season, where he made 15 appearances in total. He joined United from Huddersfield Town in 2017 after they shut down their youth academy.

Mark Hughes delighted with the move

Sam Murray will be looking to make an impact in professional football, having never made a senior appearance during his Manchester United spell. The left-back was part of the FA Youth Cup-winning side and trained regularly with the first team but was never handed a competitive debut for the club.

Speaking after the deal was confirmed on Thursday, Carlisle head coach Mark Hughes glowed: "We're delighted that Sam is joining us, he's a great young talent who has been at a great club. He's a left sided player with good pace and good technical ability, and I'm looking forward to working with him."

Head of Football Operations, Marc Tierney added: "We're excited to welcome a promising left-back to Brunton Park. He is a grounded and driven young player, and he adds strong competition to the squad and brings real potential for the future. We're looking forward to seeing his impact as he continues to develop with us."
