THE DAILY BLOVIATION
OBR Newswire Bloviation Header
Good morning, Cleveland Browns fans!
Looking forward to watching football in 70-degree weather with no precipitation, regardless of whether it's August or December? You're in luck! It so happens that the State of Ohio has moved a bill to the Governor's desk that clears the way for the Huntington Bank Dome, as well as surrounding hotels, restaurants, and parking lots in Brook Park. Even if Mike DeWine vetoes the bill, the votes exist to override the veto.
Time for rejoicing, if you like such things.
The bill not only lends the Haslams $600 million to complete their funding picture, but it also guts the Modell Law to allow the Browns to move to Brook Park without annoying lawyers buzzing around.
If you aren't happy with this, I suppose it's time to sue someone over how the funding works, which involves raiding a pot of "unclaimed funds" that the state can access. So, lawyers will make money regardless, which is always nice.
Whether you want the dome or not, the process exposes how the system works. Politicians can be "convinced"; studies showing that economic paybacks from these types of development never materialize can be overlooked, and massive state expenditures can be presented as non-painful and almost cost-free. And the dome will be built.

I don't have a strong opinion about the dome and associated complex. I'll miss the randomness created by the weather, the feel of downtown on a game day, and a bit creeped out by the fact that a Stadium built when I was in my late thirties is already being replaced. That must mean I'm old. That the gameday experience will be turned into a giant money spigot for the Haslam Sports Group will make me feel a little queasy. Still, if costs are passed on as I think they will, many of us won't be able to afford the experience anyway.
Still, I understand the enthusiasm of many OBR Daily Newswire readers for the dome complex, and I'm sure that the grand unveiling in 2029 will be a gala event.

THE ALMOST-COLLUSION SCANDAL STORY: Yesterday, I tried to summarize the collusion "scandal" that the NFL had hidden for months following an arbitrator's ruling that collusion wasn't provable. The story moves forward today, with Pro Football Talk's Mike Florio attempting to convince the players that they should consider a legal review of the behavior of both the NFL owners and the NFLPA. Meanwhile, investigative reporter Pablo Torre makes the media rounds to cement his new fame, and the NFL watches warily.
