Outgoing Manchester United defender Sam Murray has joined non-league side Carlisle United ahead of his Old Trafford contract officially expiring.

The left-back will leave United on June 30 after being informed his contract would not be renewed. He is one of nine players who will leave the club next week.

Murray, 20, has signed a one-year deal with Carlisle, who will play in the National League next season after being relegated from League Two last term. It means he is linking up with former United striker Mark Hughes, who was appointed Carlisle boss in February.

Addressing the addition of Murray, Hughes told the Cumbrians' club website: "We're delighted that Sam is joining us, he's a great young talent who has been at a great club.

"He's a left sided player with good pace and good technical ability, and I'm looking forward to working with him."

Despite playing a key role in United's FA Youth Cup success in 2021/22, Murray failed to make his senior debut during his time at Old Trafford.

He signed his first professional contract at United in May 2023 after being taken to Spain by former United manager Erik ten Hag in December 2022 for the club's mid-season training camp and friendlies against Cadiz and Real Betis during the World Cup break.

Ten Hag also took Murray to Norway for last summer's pre-season opener against Rosenborg and he was handed a start at left-back.

Announcing his departure from United earlier this month, Murray posted on Instagram: "After seven years, my time at Manchester United has come to an end.

"I would like to thank everyone at the club for your support, especially my coaches and teammates over the years.

"It's been a privilege to represent this club, and I will forever be grateful for the opportunities and experience this club has given me. I wish everyone the best of luck for the future."
