Nick Pope could suddenly have more competition, as Newcastle United step up their interest in James Trafford.
It was recently reported that Newcastle were in talks to sign Trafford from Burnley, as Eddie Howe aims to land the goalkeeper he wanted in 2024.
The price tag remains an issue. Burnley want around £40million for Trafford, which is considerably less than what the Magpies are proposing. According to the Telegraph, Newcastle have made an offer worth £25million for the 22-year-old.
Whether or not that is enough remains to be seen, but there will be hope that an agreement can be reached. Trafford wants to join Newcastle, having come so close 12 months ago.

Nick Pope makes Newcastle United decision amid James Trafford bid
But what would Trafford’s arrival mean for the Magpies’ current starting goalkeeper?
It has been reported that Newcastle want to keep Nick Pope at St James’ Park. Fortunately for Eddie Howe, the England international feels the same.
According to Leeds Live, Pope has no intention of leaving Newcastle United even if another goalkeeper arrives this summer.
Leeds United have been linked with Pope, but it would appear that the newly promoted side will have to look elsewhere for a stopper.

Nick Pope is making the right decision to stay at Newcastle United
Given how well he has played in 2025, Newcastle United have absolutely no reason to replace Pope. He was probably the Magpies’ unsung hero in the final few months of the season, despite there being calls for Martin Dubravka to be first choice.
Pope silenced the critics with his performances, and will certainly start the 2025/26 season in Howe’s starting XI. Even if Trafford is added to the Newcastle United squad, Pope should retain his place in the side.
Fortunately, Newcastle will have enough games next season that they can alternate in between the sticks. They will be involved in four competitions, with Howe’s side taking part in the Premier League, Champions League, Carabao Cup and FA Cup.
That should allow Pope and Trafford to dovetail, with the latter primed to eventually become the Newcastle United number one.
