'Special' Man City star now says he played poorly last season, needs to improve or could be…

It’s safe to say that several Manchester City players let their standards drop during the 2024/2025 season.

No wonder Pep Guardiola endured his most disappointing season at the Etihad Stadium since first taking over in 2016 when his side eventually finished in third place in the league.

However, with fresh blood like Rayan Cherki intending to impress at Manchester City and Tijjani Reijnders, Rayan Ait-Nouri and Marcus Bettinelli perhaps hoping to follow suit, there could be a newfound motivation within the squad to kick on next season.

Pep Guardiola’s ambition knows no bounds and during the FIFA Club World Cup, he will be taking a close look at his players to see whether they are ready to do what it takes to win silverware again.

Man City star Ederson admits he did not have a particularly good season

Ederson Moraes is one player who was culpable of making far too many uncharacteristic errors, such as letting Callum Hudson-Odoi’s tame effort beat him at the near post or when the former Benfica number one unnecessarily rushed out of his box and let David Hancko score a late equaliser for Feyenoord in a 3-3 draw.

Reflecting on the 2024/2025 season, Ederson admitted that he has been far from his best, saying via The Athletic: “It’s simple. The team has not performed well. Some players have not performed well. My season is not really good.”

“I haven’t had any problems along the season. But it’s normal in football. Sometimes you go low, go up, go low, go up. But as the level stands up this season, next season will be different. The new players come with a new mentality, a new hunger to win the games, win the trophies.”

Ederson confirmed he will stay at Manchester City and next season, the Brazilian will have the fire in his belly to return to his brilliant best.

Since the 2022/2023 season in which City won the treble, the 31-year-old has been far from his best, as even during the 2023/2024 campaign, his displays were questionable.

Errors such as when Ederson parried the ball into Nicolas Jackson’s path to score a tap-in during Manchester City’s 4-4 draw against Chelsea or when he hacked Darwin Nunez down to concede an avoidable penalty in a 1-1 draw against Liverpool stand out.

With Ederson’s contract at Manchester City expiring in 2026, if he does not step up to the plate next season, the Sky Blues might well have no choice but to let him go on a free transfer.

Manchester City had agreed a deal to sign Ederson replacement

Considering Manchester City moved Kevin De Bruyne on, who is widely considered the club’s greatest-ever player, they would be happy to let any of their existing players if they underwhelm for large stretches of time.

The six-time Premier League winner remains outstanding on the ball and largely, he is consistently brilliant at sweeping any signs of danger, making him the perfect goalkeeper for Pep Guardiola’s system.

Manchester City agreed a deal to sign Diogo Costa, which shows that they have a goalkeeper in mind if Ederson leaves in the future.

However, being the world-class player he is, the Champions League winner will likely be prepared to rise to the challenge of playing his best football again.
