Man Utd linked with ‘potential successor’ to Andre Onana, he’s ‘prime candidate’ to replace Emi Martinez for Aston Villa

Manchester United and Aston Villa could now battle it out for a player who could replace Andre Onana and Emiliano Martinez at the Premier League clubs respectively.

Andre Onana’s future at Manchester United has been shrouded in mystery in recent months after a disappointing 2024-25 Premier League campaign at the club.

The 29-year-old former Ajax and Inter Milan star had appeared to turn a corner in his Old Trafford spell after a strong start to the Premier League season.

However, Onana’s inconsistency over a run of matches and error-prone tendencies once again placed the United star in the firing line over his actions on the pitch.

Ruben Amorim kept faith with Onana at Old Trafford, but Altay Bayindir also suffered howlers that prevented him from dethroning the United No 1 from his spot.

United are believed to be keen on reinforcing other key areas of Ruben Amorim’s first-team squad ahead of bringing a new shot-stopper to the club this summer.

Man Utd and Aston Villa both identify the same transfer target amid the uncertainty around Andre Onana and Emiliano Martinez

Manchester United are limited in their spending power and are balancing their activity in line with the Premier League’s Profitability and Sustainability Rules (PSR).

Aston Villa, much like United, are going through their own financial woes and the Premier League club are tipped to offload Emiliano Martinez from Villa Park.

Emiliano Martinez has been linked with United and the 32-year-old Villa star is believed to be interested in staying in England and moving to Old Trafford.

The 2022 World Cup winner has a £40m price tag hovering over his head and Martinez has also attracted interest from Saudi Arabia and Galatasaray.

Martinez has been a key player for Villa manager Unai Emery and the United-linked player is under contract with the Premier League club until 2029.

According to TEAMtalk, both United and Villa have now ‘set their sights’ on signing Lucas Chevalier from Ligue 1 side Lille this summer.

Man Utd and Aston Villa hold transfer interest in Lille star Lucas Chevalier as an alternative to Andre Onana and Emiliano Martinez

TEAMtalk reports that there is ‘active interest’ from both United and Villa in Lucas Chevalier, who is under contract with the French side until 2027.

Villa have reportedly identified the 23-year-old Lille star as a ‘prime candidate’ to replace Martinez and transfer chief Monchi has been ‘leading talks’ over a transfer.

United, much like Villa, have an interest in the French shot-stopper and have reportedly ‘contacted Chevalier’s representatives’ over a move to Old Trafford.

It is reported that Lucas Chevalier, who has made 127 appearances for Lille’s senior team, is now viewed as a ‘potential successor to Andre Onana’ at United.
