Dylan Harper is off to San Antonio after the Spurs made him the second overall pick of the 2025 NBA Draft on Wednesday.
Harper was a star in his lone season at Rutgers and will now become the third member of his family to play in the NBA. His father Ron won five NBA championships with the Chicago Bulls and Los Angeles Lakers, and his older brother Ron Jr. has had brief stints with the Toronto Raptors and Detroit Pistons.
After the Spurs made their choice of Harper official last night, Ron Harper had only one question on his mind
"@spurs where's the best cigar bar in San Antonio?" he asked on X/Twitter.
Sounds like Mr. Harper plans on spending a lot of time down in Texas this upcoming season.
This past season, Dylan Harper was a third-team All-Big Ten and Big Ten All-Freshman team selection, averaging 19.4 points, 4.6 rebounds and 4.0 assists. He and teammate Ace Bailey were unable to lead Rutgers to the NCAA Tournament, largely due to the failures of their supporting cast, but both were picked in the top five of the NBA Draft, with Bailey going No. 5 to the Utah Jazz.
With San Antonio, Harper joins an exciting nucleus of budding young stars, including the last two Rookie of the Year winners, Stephon Castle and Victor Wembanyama.
The Spurs also added Arizona's Carter Bryant with the 14th overall pick in the first round on Wednesday.
"I think when you play with a bunch of great players, it just brings the best out of you," Harper told ESPN after being drafted. "They got a great young core over there. I'm just ready to get in there and make an impact anywhere I can with those guys."
Harper will make his debut with the Spurs in the upcoming California Classic Summer League, hosted by the Golden State Warriors, before heading to the NBA Summer League in Las Vegas.
