First 2025/26 cup fixture for Manchester United officially confirmed

Manchester United bowed out of the Emirates FA Cup last season following a dramatic fifth-round encounter with Fulham at Old Trafford.

After a hard-fought match, the Red Devils were eliminated 4-3 on penalties, bringing their hopes of cup glory to a premature end.

Harry Maguire also picked up an injury during the match.

It was a similar story in the Carabao Cup, where United exited the competition after a chaotic quarter-final against Tottenham Hotspur.

Spurs edged the tie 4-3 in a thriller at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium.

Despite the heartbreak in both domestic cups, the club remains determined to push forward across all levels — and that includes the academy setup.

Manchester United’s Under-21s have now learned their fate in the 2025/26 EFL Trophy draw, as they prepare to test themselves against seasoned opposition in the group stages.

The young Reds have been placed in Group D of the northern section and will face Barnsley and Lincoln City from League One, as well as League Two challengers Notts County, as Manchester United revealed via the clubs website.

Travis Binnion’s side will play all three games away from home, with the full fixture schedule to be confirmed in due course.

A top-two finish in the group will be required to progress to the knockout rounds of the Vertu Motors-sponsored competition.

This tournament offers an ideal proving ground for United’s next generation, giving them the chance to compete against senior professionals and gain vital experience in hostile environments.

Last season’s run in the Premier League 2 and their strong play-off showing will give the squad belief that they can stand up to the challenge.

With Peterborough United the reigning champions and competition intensifying each year, United’s youngsters will have to be at their best to make a deep run.

But the structure is clear: if the first team is to return to glory in the EFL Trophy, the pipeline of talent must remain strong — and it starts in competitions like this.
