Leeds United have earmarked Atalanta midfielder Mario Pasalic as a potential target this summer.

Pasalic was once on the books of Chelsea, but never played a competitive game for the Blues, and now Daniel Farke could be preparing to hand him his opportunity to shine in the Premier League.

Leeds know they need to add fresh faces to their ranks if they want to avoid the drop from the Premier League next term, and the spine of their team has been outlined as a particular issue.

Pasalic could be the perfect man to strengthen Farke’s charges in the middle of the park, as the 30-year-old has now racked up over eight years of experience in Serie A, where he has become a reliable performer for Atalanta.

Pasalic is set to sign a new three-year deal with Atalanta

Leeds’ interest in Pasalic has stemmed from the fact that the former Hajduk Split prospect is out of contract in Bergamo this summer.

The midfielder was understood to have been interested in a move to the Premier League, but Atalanta understandably have a strong desire to keep him, given how important he has been for them over the years.

It now seems as though the Italians have got their way, as they prepare to strike a fatal blow to Leeds’ transfer pursuit.

Ivan Juric’s side have reportedly reached an agreement that will see Pasalic pen a new three-year deal at the club, according to Tutto Mercato (26 June).

It is believed that the terms of the contract have already been defined, and the only thing missing is the official announcement.

Leeds must turn their attention to other targets

There is no doubt that Pasalic would have been an excellent addition at Elland Road.

The midfielder has bags of experience on the European and international stage. Therefore, he would have represented something of a coup had the Whites been able to bring him in.

However, it is now hugely important that Leeds turn their attention toward other targets. The midfield is a real area of concern this summer, given that Farke is badly short of options in the engine room at present.

The Whites have recently moved back in with another bid for Habib Diarra, and the 49ers must be able to add at least one or two fresh additions to support the likes of Ao Tanaka. If they fail to adequately strengthen the midfield, then it could prove to be Leeds’ downfall as the season unfolds.
