Leeds United must be on alert as Man City could loan out 'unbelievable' attacker, it’s not James McAtee - opinion

The loan market could be of great use to Leeds United this summer, especially as transfers become more and more pricey, especially for clubs coming up from the Championship.

The transfer market is unrecognisable to just 10 or 15 years ago. Back then, £50million would’ve bought you one of the top players in world football. Now it buys you an exciting young player at best, or Rodrigo Muniz.

Leeds United have been told to pay £50million to sign Muniz this summer. They’ve had a £32million bid rejected and it looks like that might be that, with Daniel Farke surely wary of spending all of his £150million summer transfer budget in a few fell swoops.

It certainly looks like Farke will spend big on some more attacking players, though. Leeds have signed Lukas Nmecha on a free transfer and continue to court Manor Solomon at Spurs, with a number of strikers, wingers and no.10s mentioned alongside possible moves to Elland Road.

One who’s not been mentioned, but who could be a potentially quality signing for the club, is Oscar Bobb at Man City.

The latest on Oscar Bobb’s situation at Man City

The Norwegian international, 21, managed just three Premier League appearances last season, having had to come back from a broken ankle. But he remains someone held in very high regards by manager Pep Guardiola and by the fans, too. Speaking in 2024, Pep described Bobb as a player with ‘unbelievable’ work ethic.

But as he struggles to get back into the first-team picture, and as Man City go about their summer transfer business, there’s speculation brewing that Bobb could leave the club on loan this summer.

Speaking to Manchester Evening News earlier this month, Bobb said he was eager to fight for his place at Man City, but failed to rule out the possibility of leaving the Etihad on a loan deal. For Leeds United, it could be a match made in heaven.

Three reasons why Oscar Bobb would be a quality signing for Leeds United

Oscar Bobb would slot in on the right if Manor Solomon doesn’t sign

Leeds United continue to be linked with Solomon following his impressive spell on loan last season. But as time goes by, there seems to be more and more uncertainty over whether or not he’ll actually return to Elland Road.

There’s also uncertainty over whether or not he’ll leave Spurs with suggestions that new manager Thomas Frank wants to give Solomon a chance to impress in pre-season, after leaving Brentford to take over in North London.

Naturally a right winger, Bobb is someone who could come in and directly replace Solomon in Farke’s fast-paced attack.

Oscar Bobb has Premier League quality

Bobb’s Premier League stats won’t blow you away. But the fact that Pep speaks so highly of him whenever he speaks of him, and the fact that he’s been training and playing alongside some of the world’s best attacking players since his 2023 move to the Etihad should be a good indication that he’s a Premier League player.

Leeds United want to sign Premier League-quality players this summer, recognising that their previous relegation from the top flight was in part because of a lack of top flight experience and quality. Bobb might not have a tonne of experience, but it’s a safe bet that he has the quality.

Leeds United could set themselves up for a positive relationship with Man City

We often see teams become almost feeder clubs for the so-called bigger clubs. If Leeds United could sign Bobb on loan for next season and he manages to impress, then it’ll give Man City every reason to entrust Leeds with similar players in years to come.

Look at Blackburn Rovers for example: since they loaned Harvey Elliott back in 2020/21, they managed to sign a player on loan from Liverpool every single season since then.

Leeds need to build these kinds of relationships as they won’t be able to compete financially with a lot of Premier League teams for the next few years, until they establish themselves, if that does indeed happen.
