Manchester United and Liverpool have both made summer signings who add even more fire to the rivalry.

Liverpool’s Premier League title success last season put them level with Manchester United on 20 league titles heading into 2025/26.

Arne Slot’s side have already spent over £200m this summer, including a record-breaking deal for former United target Florian Wirtz.

Meanwhile, United have signed Matheus Cunha in a £62.5m deal from Wolves and the Brazilian winger has a frosty history with Liverpool’s latest signing Milos Kerkez.

Matheus Cunha had to be ‘dragged’ away from Liverpool’s Milos Kerkez

United were linked with Kerkez in January before a deal was eventually struck for Patrick Dorgu as Ruben Amorim’s new left wing-back.

Kerkez has now completed a £40m move to arch-rivals Liverpool, meaning their new left-back will face Matheus Cunha when the two clubs meet.

Their last meeting as Wolves and Bournemouth players turned into chaos with Cunha sent off for headbutting Kerkez in extra-time of an FA Cup tie.

Cunha scored on the hour mark, but was sent off in the dying moments of extra-time. As per Sky Sports, Cunha initially refused to leave the field and had to be “dragged down the tunnel” by his team.

As a result of his actions, Cunha was banned for four matches and fined £50,000. It was Cunha’s second red card of the season after he was also dismissed in December for clashing with Ipswich Town’s security staff.

When Man United face Liverpool in 2025/26 season

If fans weren’t already excited to face arch-rivals Liverpool next season, there is now another dramatic storyline to follow when Cunha and Kerkez go head-to-head.

United face a difficult start in 2025/26 with a visit from Arsenal in the opening weekend of the Premier League season.

United’s fixtures against Liverpool land on October 18th – the eighth gameweek of the Premier League calendar – and May 2nd – the 35th gameweek.

Cunha has only beaten Liverpool once in his career, with one goal against the Reds in six matches. He will hope to improve that record as a United player.
