Everton are looking to take advantage of Lyon's financial situation by making a move to sign Malick Fofana, according to journalist Sebastien Vidal.
The Ligue 1 side were officially relegated to Ligue 2 on Wednesday night owing to financial issues within the club, leaving the former French champions in crisis while they plan to appeal the decision.
But as they await a final decision, the Toffees are looking to leap into action in the transfer window to bolster David Moyes' squad by securing a cut-price deal for one of their top stars.

Malick Fofana in action for Lyon
Fofana, who has been described as 'unbelievable', has emerged as one of the most exciting attacking prospects in Europe after his performances in 2024/25 and is said to be a target for a number of top clubs in the Premier League.
But Everton, under new owners The Friedkin Group, are looking to splash the cash this summer to make a statement as they move into their new Hill Dickinson Stadium, and they are now accelerating a move for the Belgium international.
The Toffees are hopeful of being able to beat other clubs to the punch in the race for his signature and are looking to drive the price down following the shock news of Lyon's relegation, although the French outfit are likely to wait until their appeal has been heard to make a final decision.
"Everton wants to take advantage of the opportunity created by OL's relegation to Ligue 2 to recruit Malick Fofana at a reduced price.
"Even though Lyon has appealed the decision, the Toffees are accelerating, aware that the situation could drive down the price. Chelsea is also lying in wait."
With the future of Dominic Calvert-Lewin up in the air, Armando Broja and Jesper Lindstrom returning to Chelsea and Napoli following their loans and Jack Harrison going back to Leeds, new forwards are seen to be a priority.
But with Chelsea in particular waiting to see what happens too, they may be forced to pay up a bit more in order to get a deal done quicker.
