Manchester United’s search for a new goalkeeper is in full swing, with the club prioritising a dependable shot-stopper to replace Andre Onana.

Emiliano Martínez, fresh from another solid campaign with Aston Villa, quickly emerged as United’s first-choice target.

The Argentine World Cup winner is understood to be keen on the move and even waved goodbye to Villa fans on the final day of the Premier League season.

United view Martinez as a ready-made solution.

However, their plans have taken a turn with the keeper facing interest from Atletico Madrid, who can offer Champions League football next season.

Attention has since returned to Brazil, where John Victor of Botafogo has long been admired by United scouts.

Interest in the goalkeeper dates back to 2024, when he helped his club to an unprecedented double, winning both the Copa Libertadores and the Brasileirao.

John’s stock has risen even higher after keeping a clean sheet in Botafogo’s stunning 1-0 victory over Champions League winners Paris Saint-Germain in the Club World Cup.

A feat matched only by Alisson in 2025.

The 29-year-old’s availability has only added to the intrigue, with a reported $8 million release clause included in his contract following his decision to stay and represent Botafogo in the Club World Cup.

But despite reports that United are readying a formal proposal, John’s representatives have denied any contact with the Premier League side, according to GOAL’s report.

Football Insider previously claimed the Red Devils were preparing to act on their interest soon.

However, those close to the player insist no official talks have taken place.

His agent Pedro Gutierrez confirmed earlier this year that interest had come from several European clubs, including Tottenham.

But for now, United have yet to make a move.

John remains focused on continuing Botafogo’s remarkable run in the Club World Cup, where they advanced from a group featuring PSG, Atletico Madrid, and Seattle Sounders.
