Stan Collymore claims Sheffield Wednesday should be a 'lesson' to other clubs that complain about PSR

A number of fans of top clubs in the Premier League have complained about the current rules around finance with PSR.

Many fans believe it hinders clubs looking to build their squads and recruit players, with finances needing to be considered more and more when it comes to the transfer market.

However, these rules were brought in for a reason, with the main one being that clubs should only spend within their means and not invest heavily from their owners.

Aston Villa, Newcastle and Everton fans have all complained about the difficulty of closing the gap to the top teams who have been able to get a head start in modern football regarding finances.

Former Nottingham Forest star Stan Collymore believes there is one team in the Championship that perfectly exemplifies just why PSR was introduced.

Stan Collymore believes the situation at Sheffield Wednesday shows why PSR was needed

Stan Collymore has spoken about exactly why PSR is needed in football in his column in CaughtOffside, using sleeping giants Sheffield Wednesday as his example.

The club is going through a tumultuous period as there are off-the-pitch issues, with it stemming back to the ownership and finances.

Fans are disillusioned with the current ownership under Dejphon Chansiri, with financial issues and questionable communication causing animosity.

Collymore said: “For me, the situation with Sheffield Wednesday is why PSR exists. And that’s why I don’t think clubs have the right to complain.

“Because whether it’s Newcastle, whether it’s Sunderland, whether it’s Villa, whether it’s Liverpool, whether it’s Man Utd, it doesn’t matter. So many clubs are continually overspending.

“PSR had to come in somewhere, and there has to be some rules. And whatever rules you bring in, somebody’s going to get hurt – or the perception is somebody’s going to get hurt.

“PSR is there to protect Manchester United, Liverpool, Villa, Newcastle and Sheffield Wednesday.

“If PSR didn’t exist, it would just becomes a free-for-all. And if it becomes a free-for-all, don’t cry when some of our biggest clubs that are now in the second, third or fourth tiers of English football go out of business for good.”

Sheffield Wednesday’s financial troubles look set to continue

Owls owner, Dejphon Chansiri, took to the club website to make a public statement about the most recent takeover bids from Adam Shaw.

Chansiri addressed the fans about his decision to reject the bids, believing he had done everything possible to make the deal work, but he did not believe this was for the best of the club.

He knows fans are not happy with him and want him to sell the club, and he promised that he will continue to search for someone to purchase Sheffield Wednesday.

Wednesday fans will still be dreaming of Chansiri stepping aside while also being hopeful of convincing Rohl to stay under new ownership to rebuild the club.

While John Textor’s potential takeover of the club should be approached with caution following recent developments with his other club, Lyon, being relegated to Ligue 2 for financial issues.

The club looks set to enter the next Championship season with this dark financial cloud over Hillsborough as the ownership issues look like they will continue.
