Speculation linking Real Madrid star Rodrygo with a summer move to Arsenal has intensified after the Brazilian was left out of Xabi Alonso’s squad for their Club World Cup win over Pachuca.

Rodrygo, 24, has been identified as a top target for Arsenal should he opt to leave the Santiago Bernabéu this summer. The winger’s future remains uncertain despite public backing from new Real Madrid manager Xabi Alonso, who replaced Carlo Ancelotti at the end of the season.

The Brazil international featured in Real’s opening match of the tournament in the United States, providing an assist in the 1-1 draw against Al-Hilal. That appearance was his first since being withdrawn at half-time in April’s Copa del Rey final defeat to Barcelona. However, he remained on the bench as an unused substitute in the following match against Mexican side Pachuca, sparking renewed doubts over his standing in the squad.

Addressing his decision to leave Rodrygo out, Alonso insisted it was purely tactical and reaffirmed the winger’s importance to the team.

“He looks good, enthusiastic,” Alonso said. “The other day [against Pachuca] was a technical decision, but he’s still important, he’s a special player. I think he’ll play an important part at the Club World Cup.”

While Alonso has repeatedly stated Rodrygo is in his plans for the future, reports from Spain suggest the player is yet to receive clear assurances over his long-term role under the new manager.

Arsenal are monitoring the situation closely. Mikel Arteta is keen to add another dynamic wide player to his squad, someone who can both provide cover for Bukayo Saka on the right and offer a new threat on the left. Rodrygo’s versatility and pedigree at the highest level have made him an attractive option for the North London club.
