Pelicans use second round pick to draft a Georgetown guard who takes pride in his defense

Micah Peavy calls his journey to the NBA a marathon.

Five years of college.Three schools.

But now, he’s headed to New Orleans.

The Pelicans selected Peavy with the 40th overall pick Thursday night in the second round of the NBA draft.

Peavy played this past season at Georgetown. Before his time at Georgetown, he played three seasons at TCU after playing his freshman season at Texas Tech.

The 6-foot-7 shooting guard averaged 17.2 points,5.8 rebounds and 3.6 assists last season for the Hoyas. He shot 40% on 3-pointers and was a first-team All-Big East selection. Peavy is the first Georgetown player in six years to earn that honor.

He averaged 2.3 steals per game and takes pride in his work on the defensive end.

“I just feel like I impact the game on that end of the floor better than anybody in the country,” Peavy said to ESPN after getting drafted. “I just can’t wait to show that at the NBA level.”

The Pelicans obtained the second-round pick Tuesday when they made a trade with the Washington Wizards.

In the trade, the Pelicans gave up CJ McCollum, Kelly Olynyk and a future second-round pick in exchange for Jordan Poole, Saddiq Bey and the pick they used to draft Peavy.

Peavy completes the Pels' 2025 draft class. He joins guard [Jeremiah Fears (Oklahoma) and Derik Queen (Maryland)](https://www.nola.com/tncms/asset/editorial/e5571661-c702-420c-9ab6-8f6771e81757/), taken in Wednesday’s first round.
