Tyrese Proctor becomes fifth Blue Devil drafted in 2025

Former Blue Devil guard Tyrese Proctor was selected by the Cleveland Cavaliers in the second round of the 2025 NBA Draft on Thursday night.

The Australia native heard his name called with the 49th pick, making him the fifth Blue Devil picked in the draft.

Proctor was a three year starter for Duke, playing both point and shooting guard during a career that saw him score 1,143 career points, just outside the Top 50 on the program's all-time (52nd) scoring list.

He played as the team's primary ballhandler as both a freshman and sophomore and performed well, ranking fourth all-time in Duke history with a 2.33 career assist-turnover ratio.

As a junior he moved off the ball and established himself as one of the best 3-and-D players in the Atlantic Coast Conference, leading the team with 89 made three-pointers, shooting 40.5% (89-of-220) from behind the arc on the way to taking home All-ACC Third Team honors.

He finished his final season averaging 12.4 points, 3.0 rebounds and 2.2 assists per game.

Following Duke's seasons ending loss to Houston and Proctor's decision to forego his senior season, head coach Jon Scheyer offered his opinions on a player who reclassified to play for Scheyer during his first season as a head coach.

"It's been an incredible ride with Tyrese Proctor," Scheyer said. "Tyrese, it's not just what he's done this past season. To me, it's about the journey he's been on the last three seasons. To see his individual growth that he's made over his time at Duke. To see the amount of wins… For me, I couldn't be more proud of Tyrese and what he's done this season, but also so excited for him in this next step that he's going to make. It's time for him to chase that NBA dream."

Prior to attending Duke, Proctor was a five star prospect in the class of 2023 out of the NBA Global Academy branch in Canberra, Australia, After Trevor Keels' late decision to depart Duke for the NBA Draft, Proctor reclassified into he class of 2022. He chose Duke over offers from Arizona, Arizona State, Oklahoma and Tennessee.
