If Juventus’ new front office were hoping to get a deal or two done before the end of the fiscal year, it looks like Timothy Weah has thrown a massive wrench into those plans.
According to Fabrizio Romano in the minutes following Juve’s 5-2 loss to Manchester City at the Club World Cup on Thursday, Weah has rejected the proposed move that him and fellow winger Samuel Mbangula had been reportedly involved in for much of the past week. Weah — who was notably not even on the bench for the loss to City, instead watching from what was hopefully a nicely air conditioned box at Camping World Stadium in Orlando — had been rumored as the more expensive piece in the deal with Forest that would see himself and Mbangula head to England in a deal worth a combined €23 million for the two players. It was widely assumed that the two clubs had basically agreed to a fee — Weah costing around €15 million and Mbangula for just €8 million — with the only thing left to do was to agree to personal terms with thw two players.
Well, about all that ...
A deal that Juve thought was going to happen has now hit a major road block. And just like his Juventus and USMNT teammate Weston McKennie a summer ago, not being able to agree to a deal with an English team has suddenly found the front office suddenly scrambling a little bit.

So, Juve’s first business of the summer involving an outgoing player currently on the roster looks to have hit a snag, folks. As Romano said, Weah “has no intention to accept the proposal and negotiations with Juventus for USMNT winger expected to collapse.” That doesn’t exactly sound like it’s going to hit a U-turn and suddenly see Weah accept personal terms with Nottingham Forest.
Not exactly what many were expecting just a few days ago.
When news first broke that Juventus and Nottingham Forest — who qualified for Europe for the first time in three decades this past season — were in talks over a deal for Weah and Mbangula, there was the feeling that the fees for the two players had been essentially agreed upon and the only hurdle left to clear was negotiating with the players themselves.
We haven’t heard much about any hiccups with Mbangula. But it looks as though Weah has now seen the potential deal that would have seen Juve make a profit on both players now put a halt to at least one half of the deal. (It’s still not totally known just how much Mbangula’s potential move to Forest is connected to Weah, so there’s a little uncertainty regarding if just Weah’s half is collapsed or the entire negotiations with the two clubs.)
