Rasmus Hojlund’s future at Man United is uncertain after a season where he struggled up front.
Manchester United are hoping to sign a new number nine this summer in order to replace striker Rasmus Hojlund, who scored just four goals in the Premier League last season. The 22-year-old has struggled to develop since United signed him in 2023 for a fee of £66m.
Due to that, Man United have been looking at strikers to sign, with their ideal signing being Viktor Gyokeres from Sporting CP. Although it has been reported that Gyokeres is holding out for a move to Arsenal.
Hojlund told to join Aston Villa
The Danish international’s price has dropped considerably, with reports suggesting a £43m transfer fee for him. However, it isn’t clear whether interested clubs will be prepared to pay that much to sign him after his poor form last year.
Former Premier League attacker Stan Collymore has said that Hojlund should consider a move elsewhere instead. He told Caught Offside: “If you’re looking at a deal whereby you’re looking at the transfer fee plus wages. Aston Villa could afford the transfer fee and wages. I mean there’s talk of £43m for Hojlund, but I don’t think anybody’s paying that.
“I really like him as a striker, I think he’s got the basic attributes. But he went to Manchester United and it’s basically completely shattered his confidence. In Aston Villa’s financial position, £25m plus add-ons and a wage that would not be anywhere near breaking their high wage turnover would be favourable.
“I think that if Ollie Watkins were to go, they could do a lot worse than have a look at Rasmus Hojlund. He should have gone to someone like Aston Villa first, scored you 25 goals and then gone to Manchester United 2/3 years down the line.”
There has not been any reported interest in Hojlund from any Premier League clubs including Aston Villa as of yet, however.
Man United could offer Hojlund swap deal
If Villa would be willing to sign Hojlund from United this summer, then the Red Devils could offer a swap with the Danish striker going to Villa Park, and Ollie Watkins coming to Old Trafford.
United have been linked to signing Watkins in recent weeks as a potential replacement for Hojlund, so the two teams could swap, in a deal that would see United get an experienced and proven Premier League striker, and Villa get a number nine for the future.
The Red Devils would likely have to add in some extra cash to make a deal possible, as Villa reportedly want at least £60m for Watkins. So a potential deal may involve at least a £20m transfer fee on top of Hojlund to persuade Villa to sell Watkins to the Red Devils.
