Express & Star survey: Fans back Vitor Pereira but remain pessimistic on Wolves recruitment

The Express & Star’s end of season survey found the vast majority of fans remain pessimistic about the club’s ability to recruit effectively, despite the off-field shake-up which saw the departure of sporting director Matt Hobbs earlier this month.

Domenico Tedi has been appointed director of football in a restructured leadership team and of the hundreds of supporters who took part in our poll, 75 per cent agreed Wolves were right to make changes behind the scenes.

But the same number conceded they did not have confidence in the club’s hierarchy to improve the squad in what will be a crucial summer transfer window.

Though the overwhelming majority of supporters, 95 per cent, have faith in Pereira to improve the team, nearly three-quarters said they did not trust the club to reinvest and effectively replace Matheus Cunha and Rayan Ait-Nouri.

The latter duo moved to Manchester United and Manchester City respectively for combined fees of close to £100million, leaving a significant creative hole in the squad which must now be filled.

Winger Fer Lopez last week became the club’s first signing of the summer when he joined from Celta Vigo for £19.5m and it is in attack supporters believe the club must strengthen most, with 86 per cent seeing that as the area of most concern.

A similar number believe a significant revamp of the squad is required, with 78 per cent believing it will require four or more signings to improve performance next season.

But their lack of faith in the club to get things right is highlighted by the fact more than half (53 per cent) expect their team to again finish in the bottom half of the Premier League.

Pereira engineered an impressive resurgence after replacing the sacked Gary O’Neil in December, when Wolves sat in the relegation zone, five points from safety.

They eventually finished 16th, 17 points clear of the bottom three but only 28 per cent of supporters in our survey considered it a successful season.

The January signing of defender Emmanuel Agbadou in a £16.6m deal from Reims helped shore up the Wolves defence and the Ivory Coast international quickly became a favourite among fans.

In our poll he was comfortably considered to be the signing who made the biggest impact, while he was also voted the preferred choice to replace Nelson Semedo as captain should the latter leave this summer.

While Cunha finished top scorer after netting 17 times in all competitions, it was midfielder Joao Gomes who was voted player of the season in our poll ahead of his fellow Brazilian.

Jean-Ricner Bellegarde took more than half of the votes when fans were asked to name the most improved player in the squad, while the 2-0 Boxing Day win over Manchester United at Molineux was the favourite match for supporters.
